The short version

The shapes: item photos are square (1:1). Banners and store photos are 9:5.

The sizes: Singapore asks for items of at least 750 x 750 pixels and store photos of at least 1,350 x 750 pixels. Other countries use different numbers.

The exception: Grab Malaysia asks for small files, 500 to 700 pixels and 100 to 200 KB per item photo. Use the Malaysia numbers if you sell there.

Where the official rules differ

Pixel sizes: the item size runs from 400 x 400 (Myanmar) to at least 750 x 750 (Singapore). Malaysia caps item photos at 700 x 700. Use the number for the country where you sell.

File size in Malaysia: the onboarding guide allows up to 5 MB. The help centre asks for 100 to 200 KB item photos. Aim for the smaller size if the upload screen accepts it.

Text: Malaysia lets words, labels, logos and graphics cover up to 25% of the photo. Singapore asks for no text, emoticons or watermarks.

Background: Singapore recommends textured backgrounds such as wood, ceramic, kitchen linen or marble. Vietnam asks for a bright white, plain background.

GrabFood content rules

  • Show the entire product, neatly presented on a clean background (Malaysia).
  • Put the dish in the center of the image (Malaysia and Singapore).
  • Avoid close-ups, messy backgrounds, body parts, dark photos, collages and blurred shots (Malaysia).
  • Avoid hands in the shot and overly artsy presentations (Singapore).
  • Use good light. Avoid photos that are too dark or too bright (Singapore).
  • No text, emoticons or watermarks (Singapore).
  • Use only photos you have the legal right to use (Singapore).
  • Name each file after the menu item (Singapore and Malaysia).
  • Use truthful photos of the items you sell, not watermarked images or images that are not yours (Grab merchant code of conduct).

Grab Singapore suggests three angles: an overhead flat lay, 45 degrees, or a straight-on side view for layered items such as burgers and cakes. Grab Vietnam asks for one dish per photo.

Rejection reasons and fixes

All photo update requests go through Grab's internal review. The fixes below follow the problems Grab lists.

Blurred photo

Grab Malaysia will not accept blurred photos. Steady the phone and tap the food to focus.

Not a food photo

Grab Malaysia will not accept non-food photos for menu items. Show the item itself.

Close-up that hides the dish

Pull back so the whole product is in frame, then crop to 1:1 with the dish centered.

Messy background

Move the plate to a clean surface. Clear away clutter behind the food.

Hands or body parts

Crop them out. If the crop cuts into the dish, take a new photo of the food alone.

Dark photo

Shoot near a window or under even light. Brighten gently so the food still looks real.

Collage

Use one photo per item. Do not join several photos into one image.

Too much text

Malaysia caps words, labels, logos and graphics at 25% of the photo. Singapore asks for no text at all. A photo with no text works everywhere.

Edit a photo when it is sharp and only the light, background or crop is wrong. Reshoot it when it is blurry, shows hands, or the dish does not fit a square crop.

Free photography on GrabFood

Grab published food photo tips from its in-house photographer in May 2023. They cover angles such as overhead and straight-on shots.

One photo set, every platform

Keep a set of large originals that your restaurant owns, with space around each dish. Then you can cut a square for Grab and a landscape crop for other apps.

Selling on foodpanda too? foodpanda Taiwan publishes landscape sizes, not squares. See the foodpanda photo requirements, and compare every app in the delivery platform photo requirements table.
